History of Jagadhatri Puja in Krishnanagar

According to the “Annada Mangal Kavya“, Devi Jagadhatri instructed Raja Krishnachandra in the dream to worship her in the next Shukla Navami after Durga Puja. Since then, this traditional puja has been going on; thus, he is the founder of this puja.

Another form of Devi Durga is Jagadhatri, the Hindu goddess of power. According to the “Upanishad“, the goddess Jagadhatri is Uma or Haimabati. In addition, various Hindu scriptures mention the worship of Goddess Jagadhatri.

Origin of Jagadhatri Puja

Jagadhatri Puja is held on the Navami of “Shukla Paksha”, Bengali month of Kartik. It is after one month of Durga Puja. Jagadhatri Puja is a “Tantric Puja”. The rituals of this puja are very similar to the Durga puja.

History of Jagadhatri puja

During the reign of Raja Krishnachandra Roy, Nawab Alivardi demanded 12 lakh rupees from the king. Raja Krishnachandra failed to pay that money, and Nawab took him as a prisoner at Murshidabad.

After his liberation from Murshidabad, the Raja returned to Krishna Nagar, seeing the Visarjan of Durga Puja at the ghat. Raja realized that the time for Durga Puja had passed. So, he could not organize Durga Puja this year, and his mind was filled with sorrow.

A few days later, the goddess Jagadhatri appeared in a dream of Raja Krishnachandra. He instructed Nadia Nabadwip Raj to worship her on the next Shukla Navami of Durga Puja.

According to that instruction, the Raja started this traditional Jagadhatri puja. Later, Dewan Indranarayan Chowdhury was inspired to see the traditional Jagadhatri Puja of Krishnanagar Rajbari. He introduced the first Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar at Chawl Patty.

Ashtami Puja:

After one month of Durga Ashtami, the Ashtami puja rituals of Jagadhatri puja are held on Shukla Paksha.

Navami Puja:

Jagadhatri puja is performed in two separate ways. The first is that Ma Jagadhatri is worshipped in the same rituals as Durga Puja, from The Saptami to Navami.

A common ritual is that- Saptami, Astami, and Nabami pujas are performed by three separate pujas on the Navami of Jagadhatri Puja. For this reason, the Navami of Jagadhatri puja is given more importance.

Oldest Jagadhatri puja in Chandannagar

Indranarayana Chowdhury was the dewan of the French government at Chandannagar. The worship of Jagadhatri puja fascinated him in the palace of Raja Krishnachandra Roy. After seeing this puja, he started the first Jagadhatri Puja at Laxmiganj Chaul Patty in Chandranagar.

Chandannagar jagadhatri puja procession

On the Dashami of Jagadhatri Puja, 200 illuminated vehicles procession for 12 hours on a 12 km long journey. It’s the second carnival after the Durga puja in Kolkata. However, the Procession of Chandannagar Jagadhatri Puja is the oldest carnival. Among the 171 Jagadhatri Puja Committees of Chandannagar, 50 Puja Committees are selected for the procession through the lottery yearly.

Puja committees, celebrating their golden, silver, or diamond jubilee, can have more illuminated vehicles in their procession. This procession starts at 6:00 pm on the Dashami of Jagadhatri Puja and continues the whole night. The idol returns to the “mandap” at the parade’s end.

According to rituals, the goddess is abandoned at Ranighat the next day of Dashami (Ekadashi). The procession cars are decorated with different coloured LED lights. Every year, many people come to Chandannagar to see this world-famous procession.

Chandannagar jagadhatri puja lighting

Chandannagar has become world-famous for its wide variation of lighting. It was first introduced in 1965 by Sridhar Das, and he used a flat wooden board to make running lights for Naru’sNaru’s Jagadhatri puja. From then on, the journey of illumination of Chandannagar Jagadhatri Puja started.
In the past, they used “tuni bulbs” to illuminate the streets and pandals of Chandannagar Jagadhatri Puja. However, due to the low light intensity, LED lights are currently used for illumination. In 1990, puja committees bought LED lights from Germany, Korea, and Japan and used them for lighting in Chandannagar.

There are two types of lighting in Chandannagar Jagadhatri Puja

  1. Street lighting: The Puja Pandal Committee decorates their pandals and illuminates both sides of the road, known as street lighting.
  2. Procession lighting: The procession of Jagadhatri Puja is the major platform for displaying this illumination. Numerous ‘colourful LED bulbs’ attached to woven wires, dinosaurs scattering fire from the mouth, dolphin play, fairy tales, etc., are displayed through illumination.

About five thousand people of Chandannagar are involved in this lighting work. People are fascinated by this illumination and enjoy the Jagadhatri Puja of Chandannagar.

Why is Jagadhri puja celebrated?

After the killing of Mahishasura, the gods became arrogant in their power. Then, Goddess Parvati appeared in front of them as a Kumari. He placed a piece of grass before the gods to test their strength. Agni and Bayu Dev could not burn the grass despite using their power. Then, Indra wanted to know the Swarup of the girl.
Afterwards, Goddess Parvati appeared before him as “Haimbati”.
Then, the gods give up the arrogance of their power, misunderstanding them. Since then, another form of Goddess Parvati has been worshipped as Goddess Jagadhatri or Haimbati.
